Pressure headache. A runny, congested nose. Exhaustion. Difficulty breathing. Sinus issues can majorly disrupt your everyday life by interfering with your ability to work, socialize, and generally feel as heathy as you should. If you experience sinus issues regularly, you may have a condition called sinusitis.
Sinusitis can sometimes be mistaken for a particularly severe cold or allergies that won’t away. If your symptoms don’t respond to your usual allergy or cold medication, it’s important to be diagnosed and treated for sinusitis by an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) doctor before your symptoms worsen.
What is Sinusitis?
When your body is working as it should, your sinuses work to drain mucus from each sinus cavity into your nose. But one or more of your sinus cavities may become irritated and inflamed, which causes a host of uncomfortable symptoms. This inflammation is referred to as sinusitis. Your sinusitis symptoms may last a few weeks before getting better, or they may be chronic and difficult to fully resolve. Sometimes your symptoms may come and go, as your sinusitis may seem to get better then quickly worsen again. Acute sinusitis can be treated with nasal sprays and antibiotics, while chronic sinusitis may require surgery.
Different Types of Sinusitis
Acute: Acute sinusitis occurs because of temporary inflammation from allergies, a cold, or another type of irritation. Symptoms can last up to a month.
Chronic: Chronis sinusitis occurs when the symptoms last three or more months.
What are the Symptoms of Sinusitis?
- Nasal congestion
- Facial pain, swelling, or tendering
- Reduced ability to smell and/or taste
- Mucus running down throat
- Yellow or green mucus
- Difficultly breathing through nose
- Nasal polyps (growths)
- Sore throat
Treatments for Sinusitis
You should be examined by an ENT doctor to be properly diagnosed. After your ENT examination, your doctor will be able to determine if you have sinusitis, whether it is chronic or acute, and the best treatment for your needs.
Possible treatment options include:
- Nasal sprays (decongestant sprays, corticosteroid sprays, saline sprays)
- Computer Assisted Sinus Surgery
- Balloon Sinuplasty
