What to expect with balloon sinuplasty

Chronic sinusitis is best diagnosed by an otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeon (ENT) who has the ability to determine the best sinusitis treatment options for you. If you have been diagnosed with chronic sinusitis and are not responding to medical treatment such as antibiotics, you may be a candidate for sinus surgery. Balloon sinuplasty is a less invasive option used by otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeons to treat chronic sinusitis that is clinically proven to be safe, effective, and improve the quality of your life. It is most effective when only one or two of the paranasal sinuses are involved especially the frontal and maxillary sinuses.

What is Balloon Sinuplasty™?

Balloon Sinuplasty (BSP) is a safe and effective “minimally invasive” procedure for chronic sinusitis patients who are not responding well to medications and are seeking relief from uncomfortable and painful sinusitis symptoms.

What happens during surgery?

The procedure is less invasive than traditional sinus surgery, yet effective at relieving symptoms of chronic sinusitis. Balloon sinuplasty allows patients to return to normal activities quickly. Unlike traditional sinus surgery, it does not remove bone or tissue from the nose.

Why choose balloon sinuplasty?

The benefits of balloon sinuplasty include:
Safe: More than 150,000 patients have been treated safely with balloon sinuplasty.
Effective: Over 95% of patients who’ve had the procedure say they would have it again.
Fast: While recovery time varies with each patient, people can quickly return to normal activities.

How do I qualify for this procedure?

All patients are requested to complete a Pre-Surgical Patient Questionnaire to provide us with your basic medical history.  We also require your most recent CT scan and should these confirm you are a suitable patient for the procedure and our facility we will request a History and Physical along with bloodwork and ECG, when required, from your family doctor.

What is the average process like and how long will it take for me to return to my normal activities?

Recovery time varies with each patient, generally people are able to resume normal activities within a few days.

How should I prepare for my surgery?

Your surgeon will best advise how to prepare based on your current circumstances.  Often pre-surgical preparation is limited to day prior to the procedure to aid in achieving the best possible outcome following your surgery.

Chronic Sinusitis Symptoms

Sinusitis symptoms may include two or three of the following:

  • Tenderness and swelling around the eyes, cheeks, nose, and forehead
  • Sinus pressure or congestion
  • Sinus Headache
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose
  • Loss of the sense of smell or taste
  • Yellow or green mucus from the nose
  • Teeth pain
  • Fatigue
  • Sore throat from nasal discharge
  • Bad breath

Diagnostic tests for Chronic Sinusitus

The following are some of the diagnostic tests that are most commonly ordered to evaluate sinus conditions:

  • Endoscopic Nasal Evaluation. A flexible tube is inserted into the nasal passages and fiber optic light allows the doctor to see the smallest of abnormalities in the sinuses
  • Computed tomography (CT) scan of the sinuses. CT scans obtain images from various angles of the facial area using special X-ray equipment to help identify tumors, cysts, polyps, inflammatory diseases and structural abnormalities
  • Skin test to identify specific allergens
  • Blood tests to identify underlying conditions such as cystic fibrosis, allergies or viral/bacterial infections. Mucus samples may also be obtained to identify underlying conditions
  • Membrane Biopsy. This biopsy involves removing tissue and examining it under a microscope
  • Sinus cultures and sensitivity tissue cultures may be obtained to identify the cause of the inflammation
  • Nasal cultures and smears for biopsy
