What are benefits of an Elbow Replacement?
An elbow replacement may be recommended for these elbow problems:
- Arthritis
- Fractures of one of the bones of the elbow that have not healed properly
- Elbow instability
- Loss of function
What to expect with an Elbow Replacement
Elbow Replacement surgery involves removing damaged portions of the elbow and replacing the bony surfaces with man-made prosthetic implants. The surgery repositions the elbow into proper alignment and replicates the original function, allowing for a near normal range of motion for the patient. There are Total and Partial Elbow replacements available depending on the patient’s specific situation. In addition, there are linked and unlinked elbow replacements performed.
Your surgeon will be able to discuss the recommended technique and prosthetic to suit your needs. During a consultation, we will review the procedure including the risks, benefits, recovery, and life after the procedure. It is important to remember that a Partial or Total Elbow Replacement is still major surgery. Please keep in mind that there is always going to be post-operative pain and swelling. It is important to remember that everyone reacts differently to surgery and anaesthetic, but in our experience, the techniques and protocols used by our surgeons and anaesthetists allows for faster rehabilitation to get you back to your old self.
